Defining our sculpture

Elegance is defined as Grace

of style and beauty of movement,

appearance or manners. Grace refers to bodily

movement in the nature. We started to look

into humans, plants and animals in nature

and how they bring out elements of

elegance. We then discover the uniqueness of triangle in nature.

  Grass, rocks, leaves and flower

  petals display triangles in

  nature. Triangles always

  grab the imagination and

  demand a second look.

  As before, a triangle is

  the three shortest paths

  joining three points

that are not on a line.

Something poetic

One of the requirements for submission to our lecturer florian was to write a one page essay about the thought process behind the model.

Our group member Qian Lyn came up with very poetic which I would like to share with everyone.

Elegance. It is defined as grace of style and beauty of movement, appearance or manners. Grace refers to bodily movement in the nature. We started to look into human, plants, animals and insects in nature and how they bring out elements of elegance. For instance, we thought about the thinness of petals of flowers which is elegant and the circular or spiral pattern of flowers from top view.

However, we notice that interactions of things with each other will relate to contacts or connection points. The contact points may be noticeable or on the contrary. Therefore we want to bring out the unnoticeable which involves gentle touch. This can be interactions between human with one another or of human with inanimate objects.

The unnoticeable gentle touch of human is actually touching in some way, be it physical, mental or emotional. It is one of the most powerful non-verbal communications. It is a great body language for greetings, showing sympathy, intimacy and also bonding.

There is always a degree for everything, same for touching. The forces and strokes of touching will communicate differently. A soft and gentle touch is elegant and secretive sometimes. The beauty comes in when it involves two persons not only physically but also emotionally. It has a magic element in it and the heart will feel it.

Touch always comes together with tactile feeling. When the object is reached, there’s a meeting point. A gentle touch will show a light meeting point which may not be seen from different angle. Only the edges of the surface might be seen. This simple element may bring out elegance with style.

It's a long long night

After deciding on Li Ran's model as our group's process. We have to make a casted model of his proposal using plaster. As most of us were busy with lessons in the day, we could only work on the moulding at night.

As we started to mould, we met with problems. The most common problem was plaster chipping from the sculpture. This was partly due to our carelessness while removing the formwork. As we did the second and third cast, we eventually got a model that we really liked.

Coming Up with the Inspiration

Our brief called for a sculpture that has a footprint maximum 30cm x 15cm and a max height of 240cm. The resultant sculpture will be a slender pole-like structure that can examplify elegance.

Our group decided to work with the theme "Nature".

Take a look at some of our process models to see if we have achieved our goal!
